WELCOME CARSON FAMILIES
This handbook has been prepared to acquaint parents and
students with all aspects of our school community. Please read it carefully and
then save it for future reference. It is filled with important information that
you will need throughout the year.
As we
prepare to begin another exciting school year, I would like to remind you of one
thing that could make this year the best year ever for our Carson family.
We
believe that all teachers have a right to teach and all children have a right to
learn. We will be working with you
and your children throughout the year to make certain that everyone’s rights are
being respected.
You
send your child to school to learn. Our vision is to make that happen in a
school where children feel good about themselves. We invite you to be our
partner in discipline and learning.
The
following are our mascot and school colors.
School Mascot – Cougar
School Colors – Blue and Gold
School Pledge –
Kids for Character
I pledge to be a student
of character.
I will be worthy of trust.

fairness.
I will show that I care.
I will be a good citizen,
And always do my share.
WHAT IS CARSON
SCHOOL ALL ABOUT?
We are a neighborhood school in the
Price Hill area. The neighborhood school allows for active participation of the
students, families and community in school events. The school is a reflection
of the community as a whole. We will make use of support services and
allocations of resources to effectively teach and assure that learning
prevails. We will achieve our goals and uphold our vision and mission by active
participation of the staff, parents, students and community. We will maintain
trust and respect among all members of the Carson learning community.
MISSION STATEMENT
We, the community of Carson School: students, Carson
staff, parents, guardians, caregivers, and the Price Hill Community work in
collaboration for our goal of academic excellence. We are committed to
nurturing the spirit and development of each child and to educating each child
for life.
We
expect each child to meet or exceed the Cincinnati Public School's standards.
SCHOOL DAY
Our regular school day will begin at
7:45 a.m. and will end at 2:15 p.m. Pupils should arrive no earlier than
7:35 a.m. and leave no later than 2:45 p.m. We are unable to provide
supervision prior to 7:30 a.m. or after 2:45 p.m. A student will be considered
tardy if they are not in the seat and ready to begin class at 7:45.
BREAKFAST/LUNCH
Breakfast will be served beginning at
7:45 a.m. All students will have breakfast free. Students will go to breakfast
with their grade level. Each classroom will have 15 minutes to eat their
breakfast. All students will go through the breakfast line. Parents, please
encourage your children to have breakfast at school. It will be a great way to
start each child’s day. All families will need to complete the free/reduced
lunch form for the 2006 - 2007 school year. The school office is not permitted
to loan lunch money to children. Students who are buying lunch should pay for
their lunch in the morning.

FORMS
WE NEED A FORM FROM EVERYONE PLEASE.
It is important that you complete
the Free Lunch Application Form you received in the packet mailed from the Board
of Education and return those forms to us by the first Friday of the school
year. If you did not receive the form, please come to the office to pick up the
form. The teachers will give the students many forms to complete the first week
of school. Please complete all the forms and return the forms as soon as
possible to the teacher.
DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP YOUR CHILDREN
Students should not come to school
before 7:35 a.m. We want to teach our children to be independent so we ask that
you bring your child to school and leave once you drop the children at the
door. In the interest of safety as well, we ask that you not congregate
in the halls and lobbies when dropping off or picking up your child. All
visitors (including parents) wishing to visit our school must first receive
permission from the office and receive a visitor’s pass, which must be worn for
the duration of the visit. This procedure is required in order to ensure
the safety of students and staff. We appreciate your cooperation in this
endeavor.
ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES
Begin and end your day in a responsible way!
MORNING ARRIVAL AND TARDY
Students who arrive in their
classroom after 7:45 a.m. are tardy. Students should report directly to their
classroom when they arrive. If a student is tardy they need to get a tardy slip
from the students/staff at the tardy desk which is outside the office. The
students need to give the slip to their teacher. If a student does not have a
slip they will not be permitted in the classroom. Students who are tardy should
have a note from their parent/guardian explaining why they are late. We need to
have the notes on file.
BUS RIDERS: ARRIVAL
Remain seated on the bus until a
staff member is outside by the busses. Go directly to your classroom.
BUS RIDERS: DEPARTURE
Once all of the busses arrive, the
bus riders will be dismissed with walkers and car riders through the West door.
Walk quietly and stay in line until you reach your bus. Modular classroom
students walk on the outside to the busses. The teachers will practice the
procedure with you. The busses will leave three minutes after the dismissal
call is made.
WALKERS: DISMISSAL
Walkers will be dismissed as soon
as busses arrive and we call for dismissal. Your teacher will escort you to the
designated exit. If students are meeting brothers or sisters, they need to
arrange to meet them at the West door each day. Students who walk home
unaccompanied by an adult must leave the school grounds immediately upon
dismissal. If students are meeting kindergarten and first grade brothers or
sisters at the church they will be dismissed with the walkers to go up to
church. Parents are responsible for supervising their children as soon as their
teacher has dismissed them.
Bikes, skateboards and rollerblades
are not allowed on the playground at dismissal time. If a student rides a bike,
scooter or skateboard to school they must walk it once they are on school
grounds.
It is important that children be
picked up on time. Students who have not been picked up by 2:30, will be taken
to the office after the teacher has contacted the parent/guardian. Supervision
ends at 2:30 p.m.
We will make every attempt to
contact a parent/guardian to see if we can help out the situation. However, the
office closes at 3:00 p.m. The office staff will contact District 3 police and
241-KIDS for their assistance.
EARLY DISMISSAL:
The student needs a note from their
legal guardian. This note must be signed by the legal guardian and include a
daytime telephone number for verification.
1.
The note needs to be given to the teacher during morning homeroom time.
2.
The parent/guardian should report directly to the office to sign the
student out and wait in the office. The student will be called to the office.
Anyone picking up children from the church early must sign the student out at
the main school building. We will call the church and have the student get
ready.
3.
We may only attempt to contact persons previously designated (on the
emergency card) by the legal guardian in the event that a child needs to be
dismissed early due to illness.
4.
Children will not be dismissed to anyone who has not been previously
authorized in writing by the legal guardian.
5.
We must be able to verify any changes in dismissal requested via
telephone. This means that the office must be able to contact the legal
guardian at a previously designated telephone number.
Students in grades K through 6
must have a parent’s note for any changes in daily transportation. This note
must include parent signature, daytime telephone number and be taken to the
office before classes begin. This note cannot be used to request a change in
route number or assigned stop. A separate form must be completed for this
request. We will not honor any requests that cannot be verified. No
Exceptions!!!

come to the cafeteria with your class. Students eating school breakfast or

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PLANS
Teachers have a class management
plan in place in their classrooms to support students in meeting school
expectations. The classroom management plan is developed with the students.
Teachers will review the plan as necessary. While teachers may find it
necessary to review rules with their entire class, consequences for misbehavior
will be applied individually to students. Group consequences will not be used
to correct one or two misbehaving students. Music, Art, Physical Education, and
band teachers also have a classroom management plan in place. They are
responsible for behavior incidents that occur in their classes and will follow
the steps to take with a discipline problem. Teachers will send home the plan
they will follow in their classroom.
INTERVENTION BASED SERVICES
and POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT TEAM
The IBS / PBS team is available for
all student concerns. It consists of the administration, school psychologist,
visiting teacher (SSW), intervention specialist, parents, and staff members and
can access other specialists, such as the occupational therapist, speech and
language therapist, and outside counselors, as needed. The team is made up of
all people involved with the child of concern.
DISCIPLINE AND THE CHILD WITH
SPECIAL NEEDS
Our goal at Carson is to provide
fair, consistent discipline for all children. For most children with special
education needs, this simply means that the regular classroom management plan
will be used with them as with typical students. However, some children with
special needs do have a behavior plan included in their Individual Education
Plan. Staff is made aware of this and carries out the behavior plan for that
child as it is written. Should a child develop a need for a behavior plan, the
teacher will document the evidence of that need and appropriate support will
follow.
GUM
NO GUM MAY BE CHEWED BY ANY PERSON AT CARSON
SCHOOL ANYTIME DURING THE SCHOOL DAY.
DETENTION PROGRAM FOR
STUDENTS
The Detention Program is used as a
consequence for behaviors that are not corrected after warnings and
corrections. Its purpose is to help students take ownership for behavior
choices that disrupt the educational process.
·
The parent will receive a notice 24 hours prior to the child’s
detention.
·
Failure to serve a scheduled detention will result in the student
having an appropriate consequence according to the classroom behavior plan. If
a student misses more than one detention it will result in a conference with the
parent, teacher. This conference can only be scheduled before or after school
unless special arrangements have been made.
·
The parent is responsible for the child’s transportation home if
the detention is scheduled after school. After the detention the child will not
be supervised. Parents need to have a pick up plan in the event that their
child is given a detention.
ALTERNATIVE TO SUSPENSION
The following steps may be taken as
an alternative to a child attending the alternative to suspension program:
1.
The parent attends an Intervention Conference to assist with strategies
for the child.
2.
The parent attends school with the child.
3.
The child is assigned to Saturday School.
4.
The child is assigned to the Alternative to Suspension (A2S) Program.
Please review the district Positive
Behavior Support information received from the district. We follow the district
guidelines.
We will have a time-out room
which will allow students to regroup before returning to situation they are
having trouble with in school.
